Ken Illgunas was an ordinary man until he had an idea that was on his heart that he knew he had to accomplish. When he found out about global warming he did extended research to see what was affecting some of it and the Keystone Pipeline was one of the major impacts relating to it. The Keystone Pipeline is an oil pipeline system that goes through Canada all the way to the United States of America but specifically ends in Texas. So why is the Keystone Pipeline bad? It is bad because it affects the earth particularly the wildlife and destroys the atmosphere to get oil.
Continuing from when Illgunas had the idea to travel all the way from Canada to Texas he was inspired and his mind would not change. At the beginning of his life he was a basic man who worked at a fast-food restaurant, never would he think he would be taking on this adventure. In preparation for this journey, he needed to get supplies. Little did he know he was going to spend 80,000 on the whole trip. Throughout the beginning of his journey, he started to get food and create different boxes. The reasoning for this was that as he was traveling he would be able to send them to different mailboxes across the whole pathways of his journey. Personally, I think that was very creative and innovative because then he can carry the bare minimum and not have to worry about the food in any certain way. After preparing for his long journey, constant fears of doubt, and thinking he was insane he finally started his journey.
Throughout his journey, he was able to document all of his experiences whether it was through pictures, meeting other people, and occasionally being on the news discussing his travels and global warming affecting the earth. Illgunas made a site that further detailed his journey http://www.kenilgunas.com/p/travels.html . Even as he discussed his journey with some of the High Point Students the audience could tell he was very passionate about it. It was taking the unexpected and random thought that one single man had, and making that dream a reality while exploring and understanding more than you were expecting. As Ilgunas website states, “rule number one of thumb, prepare for anything, especially failure.” (Ilgunas) Personally, I agree with that statement because you are not really living life and experiencing what is around you. However, you have to have an open mindset to accept failure and life not going smoothly.
